Explication des Onze présents faits par les Ambassadeurs Iroquois le premier décembre 1665.
Explanation of the Eleven presents given by the Iroquois Ambassadors on December 1st, 1665.
Le premier des présents est fait pour répondre aux mots que les Ambassadeurs reçurent de Mr. de Tracy en le première audience. Dont le premier fut pour dessiller les yeux à ce qu’ils visent les mains du visage d’Onnontio, c’est-à-dire Mr. de Tracy, plein de douceur, et d’humanité.
The first of the presents is given to respond to the words received by the Ambassadors from Mr. de Tracy in the first hearing, of which the first was to open their eyes to what they see the hands of Onnotio’s face, meaning Mr. Tracy, showing gentleness and humanity.
Le second, pour ouvrir leurs bouches, et nettoyer leurs gosiers; afin qu’ils puissent parler avec plus de facilité, de douceur, et d’agrément.
The second, to open their mouths and cleanse their throats, so that they may speak with greater ease, gentleness, and pleasantness.
Et le troisième, pour rassurer leurs Esprits, à ce qu’ils puissent produire leurs sentiments, et découvrir leurs pensées purement, et sans déguisement.
And the third, to reassure their Spirits, so that they may express their feelings, and discover their thoughts purely, and without disguise.
Le Second pour le conjouir du retour du S. Le Moyne, qu’ils tenaient prisonnier, et qu’ils ont ramené en santé, sans souffrir qu’il lui fut arraché aucun ongle, et qu’aucune partie de son corps fut brûlée, et s’explicant par ce même présent de tous les offices qu’ils ont rendus et particulièrement le Capitaine Garagontie au S. Le Moyne, et à tous les Français qui ont été captifs dans les habitations des Iroquois.
The Second is for the celebration of the return of Lord (Seigneur) Le Moyne, whom they held prisoner, and whom they brought back in good health, without having any nail be torn off, nor any part of his body be burned, and explaining with this same present all the duties that they have offered and particularly Captain Garagontie to Lord Le Moyne, and to all the Frenchmen who had been captive in the dwellings of the Iroquois.
Le Troisième pour témoigner qu’ils ont enterré avec les morts de leurs nations, la mémoire de l’Injure, et du tort que les Français leur ont fait en les tuant, ou en souffrant qu’ils fassent massacrés par les Algonquins et Hurons, et généralement tous les torts qu’ils ont reçus, ou par infraction de Traité, ou par mauvais traitement reçu en la personne de leurs Ambassadeurs, ou par la détention de leurs presents sans y répondre, en un mot oubliant généralement tout le passé pour n’en conserver aucun ressentiment.
The Third to testify that they have buried along with the deaths of their nations, the memory of Insult, and of the wrong done by the French by killing them, or tolerating that they be massacred by the Algonquins and Hurons, and generally all the wrong that they have received, or by Treaty violation, or by the ill treatment received in person by their Ambassadors, or by the keeping of their presents without responding to it????, in a word, forgetting in general all the past so as to not retain any resentment.
Le Quatrième que se souvenant fort bien qu’il y a eu souvent des traités de paix faits entre les Français, et eux, ils ne viennent pas en demander une nouvelle, mais bien confirmer la première, et témoigner la passion ardente qu’ils ont de la conserver inoubliablement dans les trois nations supérieures.
The Fourth, remembering very well that there have often been peace treaties made between the French and them, they don’t come to ask for a new one, but to well confirm the first, and bear witness to their strong passion to keep it unforgettably among the three superior nations .
Le Cinquième pour inviter les Français à les accorder deux Robes noires, par ce terme, ils entendent des Jésuites, un armurier pour raccommoder leurs armes rompu, et un chirurgien dont ils ont besoin pour panser leurs blessés, se souvenant qu’ils ont recu de charitables, et utiles assistances des médecins Français qui souvent les ont fait ressusciter, c’est ainsi qu’ils nomment le guérison.
The Fifth, to invite the French to grant them two Black Robes, by this term they mean the Jesuits, a gunsmith to mend their broken weapons, and a surgeon whom they need to dress their wounds, recalling that they have received charitable, and useful assistance from French doctors who often brought them back to life, that is what they call the recovery.
Le Sixième, qu’ayant appris avec beaucoup de déplaisir la mauvaise nouvelle de la mort du Père Le Moyne , ils souhaitent de le faire ressusciter, et finirent par ce présent à leur accorder un successeur qui ait pour l’instruction au principe du Christianisme et aux mystères de la religion les mêmes inclinations que le Pere.
The Sixth, having learned with much displeasure the bad news of the death of Father Le Moyne, they wished to resurrect him, and finished with this present to grant them a successor who would be instructed by the principles of Christianity and the mysteries of religion the same inclinations as the Father.
Le Septième, pour demander qu’on remette au Capitaine Garagontie une femme Iroquoise prisonnière, et un enfant pris par la nation des loups, afin que, retournant avec cette marque de la considération que les Français font de lui, il ait occasion, et sujet de convaincre sa nation, non seulement de la bonne foi des Français, mais de la reconnaissance qu’ils témoignent aux soins qu’il a pris de conserver leurs frères, desirant fortement de Garagontie qu’on lui accorde cette grâce, d’autant plus que l’étant souvent employé à procurer la liberté des Français captifs par rachap et avec profusion de présents on lui a toujours reproché que les Français n’en auraient point de reconnaissance, et qu’il déscherait de son crédit s’il retournait sans ramener cette femme et ces enfants prisonniers, assurant au surplus qu’il conserverait toujours une forte amitié pour les Français, et une inclination pareille à les assister dans tous leurs besoins.
The Seventh, to ask that Captain Garakontie be returned an Iroquois woman taken prisoner, and a child taken by the Wolf Nation, so that, returning with this sign of consideration that the French make of him, he may have the opportunity, and subject to convince his nation, not only of the good faith of the French, but of the recognition that they testify of the care he has taken to preserve their brothers, strongly desiring of Garakontie that he be granted this grace, all the more having often been given the task to procure the liberty of the French captured by rachap?? And with an abundance of gifts, he was always reproached that the French would not have any gratitude, and that he would damage his credibility if he returned without bringing back this woman and child who were prisoners, assuring in addition that he would always keep a strong goodwill toward the French, and a similar inclination to assist them in all their needs.
Le Huitième pour obtenir la liberté d’une femme huronne qui est d’une famille de la même nation refugiée chez les Iroquois qui a été prise en guerre par Les Algonquins, et qui se trouve présentement dans le fort des Hurons à Québec, afin pareillement de faire connaître son crédit parmi les Français, et qu’on lui fait un aussi favorable traitement qu’on ont reçu de lui ceux des Français qui sont tombés entre les mains des Iroquois auxquels il a pu procurer la liberté.
The Eighth, to obtain the liberty of a Huron woman who is a member of a family of the same nation taking refuge among the Iroquois who were taken during war by the Algonquins, and who currently finds herself in the fort of the Hurons in Quebec, so likewise as to make her credibility known among the French, and that she be given a treatment as favourable as the one received by the French who had fallen into the hands of the Iroquois to whom he was able to procure liberty.
Le Neuvième, pour témoigner qu’il ne propose plus une paix en la manière de celle du passé, qu’il ne prétend pas tenir les Français que par l’extrémité de la frange de la robe, mais qu’il les embrasse par le milieu du corps, ne promettant pas seulement de conserver cette paix au nom des Anciens, mais encore de la Jeunesse qui souvent la troublait mal à propos, contre le sentiment des Vieillards, aussi il demande au nom de cette même Jeunesse que les Algonquins, et les Hurons ne la troublent pas de leur part, ne fassent aucun partie de guerre sur eux, et ne s’opposent point à leur chasse.
The Ninth, to testify that he will no longer propose peace in the same manner as in the past, that he will not [claim to hold the French but by the edge of the fringe of the robe???], but that he embraces them by the middle of the body???, promising not only to preserve this peace in the name of the Ancients, but also of the Youth who often disturbed it badly, against the feelings of the Elders, therefore he asks in the name of these same Youth that the Algonquins, and the Hurons, will not disturb the peace on their part, nor partake in any war on them, nor oppose in any way their hunt.
Le Dixième, pour assurer que, quoique les Onneiouts qui ne savent rien de la venue des ambassadeurs des trois nations supérieures, ne les ayent point chargé de présents pour demander la paix celui de cette nation qui se trouve dans cette ambassade n’y étant que par occasion, ils assurent, cependant, qu’ils n’entreprendront rien qui puisse troubler la paix, et qu’ils ne feront aucun partie de guerre, ainsi ils demandent qu’ils soient traités de même que les trois nations superieurs.
The Tenth, to assure that although the Oneida, who knew nothing of the arrival of the ambassadors of the three superior nations, did not send any presents to ask for the peace of this nation who is in this confederacy, the one (representative) of this nation who finds himself in this embassy being there only by chance, they assure, however, that they will not undertake anything that may disturb the peace, and that they will not take any part in war, thus they ask that they be treated in the same manner as the three superior nations.
Le Onzième pour suspendre la guerre contre les Agneronnons, qui n’étant point avertis de l’arrivée des Français, et du dessein qu’ils forment de détruire les cinq nations Iroquoises, n’ont point envoyé à l’ambassadeur, assurant qu’aussi tout qu’ils en auront puis qu’ils n’y manqueront pas, et pour demander le temps nécessaire au Capitaine Garagontie de passer chez les Agneronnons ce qu’il promet de faire incessamment pour les avertir avec assurance que si lorsqu’il leur aura parlé ils n’entrent dans le même traité de paix.
The Eleventh to suspend the war against the Agneronnons, who, not being warned of the arrival of the French, and of the plan they have formed to destroy the five Iroquois nations, have not sent for an ambassador, assuring that and to ask Captain Garakontie for the time necessary to pass by the Agneronnons. Which he promises to do shortly to warn them with assurance that when he will have spoken to them they will not enter in the same peace treaty.
